I wanted to share with you the dishes we had on thanksgiving day. Luckily, I was able to make everything I had planned for the day.
I give you breakfast – ‘Agege’ Bread. It sure looks much better than the first time I made it. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about the taste. The first one tasted much better even though it was quite dense.. I was scared it would’t rise so I added more yeast. It did more harm than good though as the bread fermented too much and had a bitter taste.
We kept it simple though – Bread, butter and jam. We were saving our appetite for lunch.
Next was my much anticipated Tur-Duc-Ken. I decided to buy one instead of making it from scratch as it would have been too much of a hassle. I bought the Tur-Duc-Ken Roll instead of the whole Turducken. The roll is made up of breast meat from each poultry.
I actually have mixed feelings about this one. The shrimp and sausage jambalya was surprisingly quite nice. And it wasn’t dry but there was just something… I guess I had very high hopes and it just seemed like an anti-climax when I tasted it.
If you have never had Tur-Duc-Ken, I would recommend you try it at least once. And decide for yourself what you think. Next year, I would try something different. Maybe just duck!
I added maggi (it makes everything taste better here), dry pepper and butter.
Perfectly Plated
I am sorry I didn’t get a very good picture of the inside. Hopefully you can differentiate the layers. The duck meat is the dark brown one, the chicken is below and there is some shrimp which is part of the jambalaya filling. All wrapped in the turkey breast.
The usual suspects at any Nigerian party definitely had to be included. Fried rice and Jollof rice. My sister in law thought the way I made my fried rice was weird. What I do is par boil the rice. Rinse and drain. Season and boil again till soft. Then I fry the chopped ingredients separately and mix them together. For me, this is the best method to avoid mushy fried rice.
For the jollof rice. I use my darling sisters method. I would share it with you someday. It is tried and tested. And oh, for the first time, I let it burn slightly so that I could get that local taste. It worked! Plus the almost burnt parts tasted really nice.
No proper Nigerian menu is complete without Dodo. I love them chunky and cut diagonally. You get all the juicy goodness. I don’t like party dodo that they have cut really small.
Unfortunately I forgot to get a picture of my fresh fish stew but you can find the recipe here.
Now for my favorite part…Dessert! Remember the Pumpkin Bread we made a few weeks ago? If you don’t you can find the recipe here. Well, I said it would pair perfectly with Butter Pecan Ice Cream and it sure did!!! This was definitely the highlight of my day. Simple perfect in every way.
Now that thanksgiving is over, I am looking forward to the “Most Wonderful Time of the Year”.
Enjoy!
